課程概述

This course provides some essential guides to listening and conversation,
presentation and debate skills and will offer weekly practices in listening and
speaking. Students are expected and required to participate in in-class
conversation and respond to teacher's questions in English. The course will be
conducted with weekly practices of note taking, in-class discussion, individual
and group presentation, speech recording, video viewing provided by the
instructor and debate. Active participation and devotion is highly demanded
and appreciated.

課程目標
This course at the second semester aims at offering some essentials
listening skills and providing sufficient practices in presentation,
forum discussion, public speech, issue discussion and debate.
課程要求
Course Requirement:
1. Active Participation: Students are expected to attend sessions of inclass
discussion and video viewing on different topics. Students are also
expected to do extra study based on the provided handouts targeting at
the forum topic for the upcoming week. Participants in forum discussion
will be assigned occasionally as the coordinator of forum discussion.
2. Class Discussion/Forum Discussion: Students are required to join class
discussions in every meeting. Students’ ability to raise and take questions
and to join discussion is regarded as a valuable indication in their learning.
This course at the second semester focuses more on a higher level of
issue discussion in which expressions of opinions and engagements with
different opinions are emphasized. This also means that there will be more
practices and previews in order to help you to become a more fluent
speaker.
3. Group and Individual Presentations: Students are expected to form a
group of three and conduct ONE group and ONE individual presentation
English Oral Training II-Spring 2017 1
Spring 2017 English Oral Training II
(usually on Thursdays, with more demanding regulations on time control
and drafting). Students are expected to do the group presentation with an
assigned topic related to class discussion viewing. The individual
presentation has to follow topics of class discussion as a supplement and
extension to class learning. All presentations, group and individual alike,
last about 15-20 minutes, followed by discussions, with no audio or video
aids in the hope that speakers rely more on the essential skills of their
communication. Drafts are allowed but cutting down reliance on the draft is
highly anticipated.
4. Debate: Students are expected to form a team (4 teams in total) and
join debates on chosen topics. The four teams of the class will be divided
into two sides. Only the winner of each division will be privileged to
proceed to the second round of debate and win generous bonus.
